I’ve been experimenting with epoxy resin during the last year or so, learning to cast in molds and make clear domes over finished pieces. It’s a relaxing activity that involves a lot of stirring and patience.
As with anything new, the first few times I tried to make something halfway decent ended up as unsalvageable failures. I had so many problems with bubbles, going a little too heavy on the colorant, soft flaccid resin (sadness), debris, stickyness, not letting it cure long enough, etc. I kept some of my failed pieces as reminders of what not to do, as well as a representation of how far I’ve come.
I’m still pretty surprised that early into me discovering resin I did a little impromptu workshop in creating embedded coasters – and none of my students’ work turned out to be miserable failures! Shh, don’t tell anyone but I had my fingers crossed during the cure stage that the weather and luck would be favorable for their success.
I am by no means a professional, it’s just that each attempt gives me more experience and I think that’s pretty cool. Apply that to other areas of your life if you want, you never know if you’re gonna be good until you learn to be okay with making mistakes.
Due to our ongoing circumstances (coughcough), I have made more time to explore and experiment. Part of what gets me excited is the process of creating something, it’s a quiet peace. Sometimes it isn’t so quiet; you can jam out to music, talk over a bad movie, or swear profusely to let out some steam (either you messed up or are REALLY excited to have figured something out!).
After playing around with resin, I am now more comfortable in the process and have begun piecing together what I’ve learned to create an assortment of cute things. I’ll be revealing some of these when I reopen my shop, but here is a preview of what I’ve been up to:
Let me know your favorite color combinations and I’ll try creating a mix in some of the shiny molds I have!
